TickSymptoms of tick-borne diseases include: fever, muscle and joint pain, stiffness, and rashes. If untreated, these health problems can become severe and long-term treatment may become necessary.

Tick prevention in pets is very important in areas where there is exposure. Frontline Flea Control for cats and dogs is a once a month topical treatment which is highly effective. Personally I use and am happy with Frontline Top Spot for cats and K9 Advantix. They have never let me down.

TickWhen I see a tick, I don’t know if I should scream, cry or faint. These parasites look like something out of a horror flick. Not only creepy, ticks can cause disease.  Tick control products such as Frontline for dogs or cats, the new K9 Advantix, Preventic Collars, and Kiltix are effective measures to kill ticks. It may take as long as 1 to 2 days for a tick to drop off your pet, even though it is killed fairly quickly once exposed to the active ingredients in a product. The fastest and probably the most efficient way to kill ticks is to expose them directly to a wet product like the EctoSoote Flea/Tick Shampoo or the Mycodex Shampoo.

Contrary to common belief, fleas do survive during the winters, especially indoors. To ensure proper flea and tick control and minimize risk of infestation, continuous year-round treatment is recommended even in winter months.
A single bite can cause diseases like Lyme Disease, Babesiosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, flea allergy dermatitis developed from flea bites, tapeworms in pets can also be cause by Fleas, life-threatening Anemia can be caused Flea Infestations.
The possibility for dogs and cats to be infected with various diseases transmitted by these parasites could increase with a heavier flea, tick and mosquito. Through the use of products that are designed to keep fleas, ticks and mosquitoes at bay, you can help prevent them from infesting your home; where you and your pets live. Improved flea protection can minimize health risks and reduce flea infestation, providing relief to both pets and yourself.

When you first notice your pet has fleas, bathing him with a flea and tick shampoo is the first step towards treating infestation. This will remove the pests immediately and give your pet fast relief. It kills adult fleas fast, and removing flea feces. After the bath you’ll need to apply a flea and tick control medication to keep the pests from coming back. I use K9 Advantix and Advantage for cats. I used to use BioSpot On Spot but I don’t think it’s as good as Advantix and Advantage.  You can also use house foggers to kill the pests already in your home. Make sure to keep your pet on a flea and tick medication year round; the best offense is a good defense.

I thought it would be helpful to give you a few facts about fleas and ticks.

  1. Fleas can bite and pass on disease to humans.

  2. The most common tick-borne diseases are Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Ehrlichiosis. Symptoms of tick-borne diseases include: fever, muscle and joint pain, stiffness, and rashes.

  3. A flea can produce 2,000 eggs in its lifetime.

  4. Fleas can survive off of pets although they need a host to feed. 95% of flea stages are present in the environment rather than on the pet, year round. This is why you should keep your pet on flea & tick control year round.

  5. Don’t just treat the infected pet. Pets and their housemates must be treated aggressively to reduce the flea burden to the lowest possible level.

k9 advantix dog You’ve gotta love that K9 Advantix commercial, you know the one. There’s a cute puppy singing in a camp setting, “There ain’t not bugs on me…”— Cute! I didn’t know about K9 Advantix until the commercial aired. I thought I’d try it on my dog, Bruce. It protects against the main two parasites, fleas and ticks, as well as mosquitoes. I didn’t under stand why they included mosquitoes until I read they can bit pets as well. I didn’t know that. I thought there would be too much fur they couldn’t bite. Disease like West Nile Virus is carried by mosquitoes and given to pets when they bite. I’d recommend K9 Advantix because it takes care of the major pests in one shop.

There’s nothing worse than having fleas in your house. It’s not only a health hazard but annoying and embarrassing! My dog, Bruce, and cat, Skipper, are indoor/outdoor pets so they bring in pests sometimes (and the occasional dead gopher — thanks Skipper). Fleas and ticks are disgusting parasites that carry disease but can be easily stopped with the right flea and tick control medicines. I use K9 Advantix for Bruce and Frontline Top Spot for Cats. Both kill fleas and ticks on one medication. As for the house, I use Frontline Spray. Just spray those suckers (pun intended) directly. They all work great and I’ve only heard positive reviews.

Last fall I made a very common mistake. I made a very common mistake, thought flea and tick protection is only needed during the spring or summer. This is not always true. I found out the hard way after taking Bruce to the dog park; he had fleas! These pests can survive in warmer climates and in houses. Stopping flea and tick medication during the fall and winter can open the door for another infestation and disease. Don’t make this mistake and keep on the medications year round. Some people are understandably concerned about the cost. I find it’s cheaper to get pet meds and pet supplies online. There are great online pet stores that offer low prices on petmeds and supplies.
